The Evolution of Educational Wage Differentials for Women and Men, 1996 to 2019.

Ordemann, J., & Pfeiffer, F. (2021, August).
The Evolution of Educational Wage Differentials for Women and Men, 1996 to 2019. Vortrag auf der Konferenz ASA 2021 Virtual Annual Meeting (VAM), American Sociological Association, Chicago, USA.
Abstract

From the perspective of the higher education expansion in Germany, the paper concentrates on the development of the higher education wage premium from 1996 to 2018. We ask how the wage premium develops over that time frame and which factors explain the trend we find. Using 206,904 observations of individual-level data of the German Socio-Economic Panel (GSOEP) we show a general upward trend in wage premiums. At the same time the wage premiums for university graduates lose their upward dynamic towards the end of the observation window, especially for men.

To the Happy Few: The Limits of Solidarity in the Political Economy of Scholarly Communication.

Knöchelmann, M. (2021, August).
To the Happy Few: The Limits of Solidarity in the Political Economy of Scholarly Communication. Vortrag auf der Konferenz Sociological Knowledges for Alternative Futures - ESA Conference 2021, European Sociological Association, Barcelona.
Abstract

The notion of solidarity insinuates that all involved in the production of knowledge are geared towards a collective endeavour: the advancement of knowledge. In this sense, produced knowledge is to be shared freely among all. The idea of open access to scholarly publications (OA) builds upon this by being founded on the charitable ideal of a democratisation of knowledge. However, the large-scale OA manifestation such as Plan S or Projekt DEAL narrow the possibility of such solidarity. The principle underlying them is to allow for a sharing of established knowledge only to the high price of buying access to the means of establishing knowledge—a commercial market of OA for which only a few have the financial means for participation. Does Wikipedia Cover the Relevant Literature on Major Innovations Timely? An Exploratory Case Study of CRISPR/Cas9.

Schmidt, M., Kircheis, W., Simons, A., Potthast, M., & Stein, B. (2021, Juli).
Does Wikipedia Cover the Relevant Literature on Major Innovations Timely? An Exploratory Case Study of CRISPR/Cas9. Vortrag auf der Konferenz 18th International Conference on Scientometrics and Informetrics (ISSI 2021), International Society for Scientometrics and Informetrics, Leuven, Belgium.
Abstract

We analyze Wikipedia’s representation of the Nobel Prize winning CRISPR/Cas9 technology to explore to what extent and with what temporal dynamics Wikipedia cites well-acknowledged or highly cited literature. We use several matching heuristics to match publications from two publication corpora with the central Wikipedia CRISPR article. A combination of verbatim searches by title, DOI, and PMID is sufficient. The Wikipedia article references a substantial amount of articles that are part of our corpora, as well as literature that is not scientific. Delays in coverage show a dependence on the dynamics of both the field and the Wikipedia article itself

A case study of the epistemic function of citations - Implications for citation-based science mapping. Vortrag auf der Konferenz 18th Conference of the International Society for Scientometrics and Informetrics (ISSI 2021), KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium.
Abstract

The use of citations as indicators of topical relatedness of publications is common in the algorithmic mapping of the structure of science. References to source documents, however, may serve a variety of epistemic functions, and hence represent rather different dimensions of topical relatedness. They may pertain to the research methods used, the empirical objects studied, the theoretical resources build on, the research questions pursued, or the external motivation for and relevance of the work. In this qualitative case study, we explore the diversity in topical dimensions along which publications are linked in citation networks.

The ‘Global South’ in the transnational student mobility network. Effects of institutional (in)stability, reputation, post-colonial ties, and cultural homophily.

Vögtle, E. (2021, Juli).
The ‘Global South’ in the transnational student mobility network. Effects of institutional (in)stability, reputation, post-colonial ties, and cultural homophily. Vortrag auf der Konferenz IPSA Virtual 26th World Congress of Political Scientists, International Political Science Association, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Portugal.
Abstract

While the important role of institutions and trust for economic transactions is well-acknowledged in institutional economics, the effects of appropriate institutions, historical legacies, and cultural similarities such as language and religion has not yet been systematically analysed in research on transnational student mobility. In our research, we analyse the phenomenon of transnational student mobility by combining and testing aspects of these different perspectives. We focus on outbound students and analyse what determines whether a particular country receives a high proportion of international students.
