Digitalisation of teaching, learning, and student life.

Schirmer, H. (2024).
Digitalisation of teaching, learning, and student life. EUROSTUDENT 8 Topical module report. Tallinn: Praxis think tank.
Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the digitalisation of higher education, presenting both opportunities and challenges. It acted as a universal catalyst for digitalization. This (forced) boost of digitalisation creates both: Possibilities for increased inclusion of underrepresented student groups in higher education on the one hand, and challenges with regards to an inflexible overreliance on digital formats for other student groups on the other hand. This report examines the interplay between institutional services, student needs, and study modes, aiming to understand their impact on satisfaction and success in higher education.

Home-based, tunnelled peritoneal drainage system as an alternative treatment option for patients with refractory ascites. Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics, 56(3), 529-539. http://doi.org/10.1111/apt.17066
Abstract

Onset of refractory ascites (RA) is the hallmark of end-stage liver disease. If liver transplantation (LTx) is not available and contraindications for a transjugular portosystemic shunt (TIPS) are present, repeated paracentesis remains the standard of care (SOC). Home-based, tunnelled peritoneal catheters (PeCa) have been suggested as an alternative treatment option. However, data on patients with liver cirrhosis are scarce. This study aimed to evaluate the safety of PeCa in these patients compared to SOC.

Social and Economic Conditions of Student Life in Europe. EUROSTUDENT VII Synopsis of Indicators 2018–2021. Bielefeld: wbv.
Abstract

The EUROSTUDENT VII – Synopsis of Indicators is the central publication of the EUROSTUDENT project and the result of the collaboration of a European-wide network. It comprises data from student surveys conducted in 25 countries in the European Higher Education Area during the seventh round of the EUROSTUDENT project. Adopting a broad, comparative perspective, the EUROSTUDENT VII – Synopsis of Indicators provides information on students’ socio-economic and study-related backgrounds, their study conditions and experiences, including international mobility, and their living conditions. It aims to inspire policy debates on the topic of the social dimension and lay the ground for further research.

Financial difficulties' relation to students' health.

Schirmer, H. (2020).
Financial difficulties' relation to students' health. EUROSTUDENT Intelligence Brief 2020 (1). Hannover: DZHW.
Abstract

This Intelligence Brief takes a closer look at students’ health. Compared to the overall population of the same age, students less often perceive their health as good or very good. Logistic regression analyses with German student data show strong and negative relations between financial difficulties and students’ health perception. Additionally, a cross-country comparison with EUROSTUDENT data consistently shows comparatively large shares of impaired students among those with financial difficulties. The findings indicate that policy makers should pay special attention to both impaired and financially challenged students in order to ensure their successful higher education participation and prevent negative societal effects of poor health.

The social dimension of student life in the European Higher Education Area in 2019. Selected indicators from EUROSTUDENT VII.

Hauschildt, K., Gwosć, C., Schirmer, H., & Cras, F. (2020).
The social dimension of student life in the European Higher Education Area in 2019. Selected indicators from EUROSTUDENT VII. Hanover, Germany: DZHW.
Abstract

This publication presents indicators on the social dimension of higher education in the European Higher Education Area in four key areas: Demographics and social background of students, transition and access into higher education, students’ employment, and the financial situation of students. To what extent can students of different backgrounds be found within the higher education systems? How open and flexible are European higher education systems in providing access to students entering higher education at different points in their lives, and with different past experiences? What are the circumstances under which students pursue their studies and how do they make a living?

Social selectivity and study flexibility. The interplay of student life and institutional dynamics in European Higher Education. Vortrag auf dem Seminar RISIS Research Seminar #40.
Abstract

The EUROSTUDENT project examines the social and economic situation of students based on student surveys in currently 25 countries. In the eighth project round (2021-2024), the collected student data was combined for the first time with a selection of indicators from the ETER project as part of a feasibility assessment. This allows for novel insights into the interplay of individual (micro-level), institutional (meso-level), and national (macro-level) characteristics. The seminar focuses on questions of social selectivity and study flexibility at different types of higher education institutions in countries of the European Higher Education Area.

Poor students, rich students. Determinants of income concentration among students from a European perspective. Vortrag auf der Konferenz EUROSTUDENT 8 Researchers' Forum, EUROSTUDENT 8 project consortium, St. Julian‘s, Malta.
Abstract

Large financial inequality among students results in very different framework conditions for studying. For 27 countries of the EHEA, the extent of financial inequality among students was first determined using the Gini coefficient. There are differences ranging from 0.24 in Norway to 0.46 in Luxembourg. Various simple linear regressions suggest that two family-related variables (educational background, type of housing) increase the concentration of income, while national public student support significantly reduces it. A multiple regression shows, however, that only national public student exerts a very strong and highly significant effect and superimposes effects of social origin.

How does international student mobility relate to German students’ trust in political institutions to handle the Covid-19 pandemic?

Schirmer, H. (2021, Juli).
How does international student mobility relate to German students’ trust in political institutions to handle the Covid-19 pandemic? Vortrag auf der Konferenz 18th IMISCOE Annual Conference, IMISCOE (International Migration Research Network), Luxembourg.
Abstract

The presentation takes a closer look at determinants of students’ trust in political institutions to properly deal with the Covid-19 pandemic from a government performance perspective as well as the culturalist approach. Special attention is paid to intercultural experience in the form of ISM, as EHEA policy makers stressed the positive effects of mobility on civic responsibility. Analyses show that both theoretical approaches have expressive impact on institutional trust. The findings support the relevance of (long-term) government performance and students’ individual economic well-being as well as social trust and intercultural experience in predicting the extent of students’ institutional trust.
