Transformationen und Kontinuitäten im wissenschaftlichen Publikationswesen – Zeitschriften und Verlage als Akteure des Wandels? (TRUK)

Start of the project: 2022-Nov-01 - End of the project: 2025-Dec-31

The publication system in science is currently undergoing significant changes, for example related to open access, the increasing use of preprint servers, new concepts of scientific writing and authorship, digital tools and infrastructures, but also through the emergence of so-called predatory journals and paper mills. These changes are related to various general developments, such as the digital transformation, an increasing economization of the publishing field, and changes in the relationship between science and society. One place where these developments are particularly evident is in scientific journals and publishers. These play an important role in the publication and certification of scientific knowledge. Additionally, they are important actors in the research system and influence scientific work and careers. Journals and publishers are affected by changes initiated in other areas of academia, such as through "open science" or problematic developments in the field of "publication ethics". However, they also drive changes themselves, such as through digitization or new review procedures. The project examines the role of publishers and journals in the transformation of scientific publishing and focuses on three questions: How do publishers respond to external challenges? What do publishers and journals change themselves? And what kind of resistance are these changes met with?
