For research funders, the output side of their funding is usually a black box. The research funding agencies have extensive knowledge about the projects and individuals have been financially supported and the amount of funding they received over a given period of time. However, there is a lack of reliable information on publications resulting from research funding and the impact they have had. Various challenges arise, ranging from linking publications to the respective research funder or research project to the varying coverage and data quality of funding information in bibliometric databases.
Taking the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) as an example, the above questions and challenges are explored in order to enable more differentiated analyses of the effects of research funding.
