best2 is the second survey on the situation of students with health-related impairments that impede their studies. The main focus lies on the difficulties and barriers which students with impairments are confronted with.
The best2-survey and the German National Association for Student Affairs (DSW)'s 21st Social Survey combine to contribute to a data basis necessary to prepare the legal implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Additionally, with regard to the recommendation of the German Rectors' Conference "One University for all" ("Eine Hochschule für Alle"), best2 data provide crucial governance expertise to university administrations, counsellors for students with disabilities or chronic illnesses and other actors in the field of higher education policy who aim to remove barriers.
Best2 is a joint research project carried out in cooperation with the German National Association for Student Affairs (DSW) and funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). In carrying out the survey, analysing the data, and reporting the findings the German Centre for Higher Education Research and Science Studies is collaborating closely with the Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS), Vienna, which already carried out the first survey on students with disabilities or chronic illnesses in 2011.
Data collection will take place in the winter term 2016/17. Initial findings are to be published in spring 2018.
