The DZHW developed a concept for almanac data on internationalisation for the DAAD in 2000, which was realised under the title "Wissenschaft weltoffen – Facts and Figures on the International Nature of Studies and Research in Germany".
"Wissenschaft weltoffen" consists of an annual report including commented schemes and charts, a web presence with a variety of in-depth charts without commentaries (www.wissenschaft-weltoffen.de), and a hotline service at the DZHW, which advises interested parties on designing their own evaluation projects and then carries them out.
The "Wissenschaft weltoffen" data base essentially covers information on foreign students and higher education graduates in Germany as well as German students abroad. The data is provided by the Federal Statistical Office and evaluated by the DZHW. In the course of annual follow-ups studies, the DZHW also receives information about foreign researchers staying in Germany and German researchers staying abroad. It gathers its information from a variety of German funding agencies that specifically promote visits abroad.
Since 2004 the data report "Wissenschaft weltoffen" has been published bilingually; it has included a focus section on a principal topic since 2010.
